Over a lifetime, many people experience harrowing events, such as gun violence, sexual assault, terrorism, combat, or natural disasters. And some –– in the US, 4% of men and 8% of women –– will develop PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms of this potentially debilitating condition include recurring nightmares or intrusive thoughts and feeling jumpy and on guard.
New guidelines highlight which therapies appear to work best –– and which need further study.
